How to Make a Bamboo Laundry Hamper With a Removable Liner

A bamboo laundry hamper does not need an elaborate cabinet or a workshop full of machinery. A ventilated frame, a washable liner, and a stable lid or rim are enough for a useful bedroom or laundry-room project.

This guide uses bamboo panels or straight bamboo strips. Measure your available space first. A single hamper around 18 inches wide, 12 inches deep, and 24 inches high is a practical starting point, but your room and liner should set the final dimensions.

Materials

• Bamboo panel or straight bamboo strips for the frame
• Four corner posts or narrow side rails
• Thin bamboo strips for the top rim and lower braces
• Washable cotton or canvas liner
• Small screws, washers, and suitable wood adhesive
• Sandpaper, drill, clamps, tape measure, and saw
• Optional hinges and a bamboo panel for a lid

Step 1: Measure the liner and plan the frame

Start with the removable liner. Measure its width, depth, and height, then add a small amount of clearance so it can slide out without catching. Draw the front, side, and top views. Leave ventilation gaps between strips rather than wrapping the hamper in a solid panel.

Step 2: Cut and smooth the bamboo

Cut the posts, rails, braces, and rim pieces to length. Support each piece firmly and use eye protection. Sand every cut edge until it feels smooth. Bamboo splinters can catch fabric, so spend extra time on the top rim and liner supports.

Step 3: Assemble the rectangular frame

Dry-fit the four posts and side rails on a flat surface. Check that opposite corners are square. Drill pilot holes before inserting screws, particularly near the ends of narrow bamboo pieces. Tighten gently so you secure the joint without crushing the material.

Step 4: Add the base and liner supports

Install two or three lower braces across the width. They keep the posts aligned and give the liner a place to rest. Keep the base open enough for airflow. Test the liner now. It should sit neatly inside the frame and lift out without rubbing against screws.

Step 5: Fit the rim and optional lid

Attach the top rim and check the opening. A lid can be made from a lightweight bamboo panel with two small hinges. Keep it light enough that the frame does not twist. If you prefer a simpler build, leave the hamper open and use the liner’s drawstring or folded edge.

Step 6: Sand, finish, and test

Sand the completed frame again. Apply a furniture finish recommended for your bamboo product, testing it on an offcut first. Allow the finish to cure fully. Put the liner inside, load it with clothes, and check that the hamper sits flat without rocking.
